Part-Time Circulation Associate

The Clarendon Hills Public Library is seeking a part-time Circulation Associate. This position performs all Circulation Desk functions including checking materials in and out; issuing library cards; accepting and processing reserve requests; taking fines/fees for overdue, damaged or lost items; answering and routing telephone calls; and, serving patrons in a friendly and competent manner.

This part-time position is 23-24 hours/week with a schedule of Wednesdays 9 am - 5 pm; Thursdays 1 pm – 9 pm; and alternating Fridays (9 am – 5 pm) and Saturdays (9 am – 4 pm). This position includes retirement benefits through IMRF (Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund).
Salary: $12.00/hour

The Circulation Associate is responsible for the duties listed below and must be amenable to other duties as assigned.


The Circulation Associate:
• staffs the circulation desk at assigned times and handles the charging, renewing and discharging of library materials.
• greets incoming patrons and directs them to proper department.
• answers in-coming phone calls and routes calls or messages to appropriate staff.
• assists patrons by competently answering basic questions about the library’s collection.
• registers new library patrons and prepares new or updated library cards.
• learns and keeps current with all activities and procedures required by SirsiDynix computerized circulation system.
• handles the assigned procedures for library program signups and registration.
• handles processing of reserve materials.
• deals with periodicals - including the processing of new issues and maintenance of back issues
• regulates and attends to the servicing of the copy machine as needed in the following ways: refilling paper bins, fixing paper jams and assisting patrons with instruction.
• handles correct routing of incoming van delivery materials.
• performs other duties as assigned by the Head of Circulation or the professional staff.


The Circulation Associate must have the ability to:
• perform library circulation duties.
• use computer technology in a public library setting.
• use general office equipment and machinery.
• lift 30 pounds and place books on the top shelves of the stacks using a step-stool.
• implement and carry out projects.
• work independently, cooperate with co-workers and maintain good organizational skills.
• communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• exercise good judgment, diplomacy and attention to detail.
• behave courteously towards staff and the public.


The Circulation Associate must:
• have completed high school.
• be able to work assigned hours which includes every other Saturday.
• have some familiarity with library work or have related work experience in data processing or clerical fields.
